Antique Angora Rug, Ushak Region, Circa 1860

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Farnham Antique Carpets

This rare and early antique Angora rug comes from a small town in Western Anatolia, woven in Ushak, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora carpets. The weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Ushaks have a soft loose feel and their designs are more often very open.

Dating around 1860-1870 it has had restoration over the years, which is visible in the soft camel tone background.  It actually adds to the character and charm in many ways, the abrash in the blue border is lovely too, this is the term for dye change.  The ends have been professionally restored too.
