Pair of Grand Tour Marbles of Alcibiades Hounds

19th century
Description

A quality Pair of C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ serpentine marble sculptures of the ‘Alcibiades Hounds’ or ‘Jennings Dogs’ as their latterly known.

In remarkably good condition having never been broken, well carved and good colour. Circa 1860.

Modelled after the ancient Hellenistic original, these copies are of the Roman marble C2nd AD version that now sits in the British museum.

Thought to represent the legendary Molossian guard dog or hound, of the Grecian statesman, Alcibiades, it was acquired by Henry Constantine Jennings in Rome c.1756.

It was subsequently sold in 1778 by Jennings to Hon. Charles Duncombe, in order to settle gambling debts. More recently it was bought for the nation from Duncombe Hall in 2001.

A similar pair of marble mastiffs are in the Belvedere Court, Vatican Museums, Rome, Italy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These sculptures represent classical Molossian hounds, modelled after an ancient Hellenistic marble sculpture known as the Jennings Dog or the Dog of Alcibiades, which was frequently replicated in stone or bronze for 18th and 19th-century travellers on the Grand Tour.

Artisans typically carved these figures from regional European stones, such as Italian green serpentine, marble, or alabaster, as well as casting them in patinated bronze to emulate classical antiquity.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved detailing, subtle asymmetry, soft wear around raised surfaces, and natural stone veins or minor hand-chiselling along the base rather than machine-moulded resin edges.

A pair of carved stone statues functions effectively as bookends on a bookshelf, flanking objects on a fireplace mantelpiece, or positioned as decorative accents atop a sideboard or writing desk.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth or microfibre duster, avoid acidic or abrasive household cleaners that etch natural stone, and occasionally apply neutral microcrystalline wax to protect the surface finish.
