Antique Bakshaish Carpet

19th century
Description

A late 19th century antique Bakshaish carpet with rich colours and a famous all over design.  More often Bakshaish carpets were woven in larger sizes and often with bold geometric designs, and vivid colours. Their designs can be quite abstract and nearly always comprised of a central motif which sprawls out in one large design to the corner spandrels or with a smaller medallion inside a larger medallion.  The design is known as the 'Herati' pattern a 16th century pattern of two fish swimming around a water-lily, stylised to two leaves around a flower. The charm and characteristics of antique carpets from this region woven in the late 19th century are just wonderful.  Deep blues, with amazing abrash (dye change), rich terracotta brick red border.

Request a home visit to see this decorative country house carpet at home. Supplied with our brilliant underlay included.

The condition of this carpet is good, with a medium pile height, showing minimal lower areas of pile.  No major restoration or damage to report.  Washed and ready floor the floor.

The weavers in Bakshaish, north Persia used the influences of tribal weavers from the Caucasian villages in their designs.  These rustic carpets are often a very similar in colour to that of neighbouring Heriz and Serapi carpets and rugs.  The early pieces such as this will always have more muted dyes purely down to their age, the natural yellows and variety of rust reds are only seen in carpets of this vintage.
