An 18th-century architectural engraving is a detailed print produced using inked metal plates to document classical buildings, ruins, and interior frescoes, often serving as visual records for scholars and collectors.

These works were traditionally printed using copper or steel plates on laid or wove rag paper, often hand-coloured with water-based pigments after the initial black-and-white impression was struck.

Authentication involves examining the paper for watermarks, checking for plate marks indented into the sheet, and inspecting the ink application under magnification to ensure it is not a modern mechanical reproduction.

Conservators recommend using acid-free mount board, UV-filtering museum glass, and a simple wooden or gilded frame to protect the delicate paper from light and humidity damage.

Historic prints should be kept away from direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions between forty and fifty percent, and handled with clean cotton gloves to prevent oil transfer.
