John Beazor Antiques is a family firm, established in 1875 and based in Cambridge since 1940. We are a traditional antiques shop, but very much in the 21st century. We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

The George II period, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by architectural proportions, the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber, and the increasing influence of early Rococo elements alongside retained Palladian weight.

Pieces from this era typically feature dense, finely grained Cuban or Honduras mahogany, solid oak drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass drop handles with matching escutcheons.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber patination, hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing characteristic of manual construction, and historical shrinkage cracks consistent with aged heartwood.

It serves as a grounding focal point in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, pairing effectively with neutral lime-washed walls and minimalist lighting to highlight the rich grain of the wood.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, and apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood surface without causing build-up.
