Antique Serapi Carpet

19th century
Description

A true masterpiece of weaving, this is one of the greatest antique Serapi carpets we have ever seen!  With an incredibly fine weave, typical of earlier carpets from this north-west region of Heriz in Persia.  The colour palette is stunning and combined with the open geometric drawing, this is a very rare and collectable carpet.  The variation in the indigo blue dyes, showing vivid 'abrash' (dye change) adds to this circa 1890-1900 or possibly earlier carpet.  With large geometric leaves connected with vines to stylised floral motifs, leading to the golden sandy medallion.  The combination of design and colour make this a breathtaking piece, that is even better seen with the human eye.  Please request a home visit to see this extraordinary rare carpet at home.  We love to travel all over the UK visiting clients and working with interior designers.

The condition is unbelievably good, with a fine tight weave and finely cut pile height all over.  Minimal low areas of pile, ends have been secured too.  In exceptional original order for this 150 year old plus carpet.  Visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey or please request a home viewing to see this Serapi carpet up close with a private viewing.

Antique Serapi carpets are more intricate finer tribal weavings of the Heriz region hand-woven by Azerbaijan Turkish inhabitants close to the city of Heriz in North-West Persia. They are famous among collectors because of their vivid vegetable dyes or soft earth tones that are woven on a geometric pattern. In terms of design, drawing, and coloration as well, Serapi carpets are clearly part of one and the same tradition as Heriz, despite being a distinct antique rug style, which originated as a Northwest Persian adaptation of early Sarouk Farahan medallion, but with a more geometric, abstract, village sensibility.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
