Antique Mahal Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely woven antique Mahal carpet dating from circa 1900-1910, full of gorgeous muted reds, blues and yellow tones.  A classical all over 'Herati' design can be seen on this decorative carpet from Persia.  The 'Herati' or 'Mahi' pattern is an ancient design, which used to resemble two fish swimming around a water-lily in very early carpets, it can been seen more frequently on 19th and 20th Century carpets as two leaves around a floral rosette.

In general the condition is good, though the carpet does have scattered low pile in some areas. Please view the main image and close up images to see the condition clearly.  It does not detract from its beauty or durability.  Structurally it is a strong antique carpet over 100 years old, and supplied with our durable rug underlay.  The rug underlay will add more body and keep the carpet safe and secure on the floor.

Woven in Sultanabad, Persia in the late 19th century, Mahal carpets were all hand-produced using soft wool and natural dyes. Designs consist of all over patterns, the Mahi or Herati pattern and can look similar to Farahan and Sarouk rugs, but they are very different in form and structure.  Mahal are neighbours to Heriz carpets, designs though are very different, as Heriz are more geometric in style whereas Mahal carpets are generally more open and floral in design and curvilinear.

Please request a home visit to select a convenient day and time for you to view this carpet at home.  We love to travel all over the UK showing our carpets in situ, helping you choose the right carpet for your home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
