Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half tester bed is a style of bedstead featuring a wooden canopy or tester that extends over only the upper section or head of the bed, rather than covering the entire length like a full four-poster bed. Popular in the 19th century, this design allowed for decorative fabric drapery to frame the headboard while using less space.

Mid-19th century half tester beds were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often adorned with flame mahogany or figured wood veneers. Internal support structures and secondary timber slats were typically crafted from pine or oak.

Authentic mid-19th century examples feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, heavy iron bed bolts or cast hooks, and flame timber veneers applied over solid carcase wood. The headboard often incorporates arched profiles, carved scrolls, or medallion panels characteristic of Victorian cabinetmaking.

To integrate a half tester bed into a contemporary setting, pair the dark mahogany wood with modern crisp white linens or tailored linen drapery attached to the canopy frame. Balancing the heavy timber structure with neutral wall shades and minimalist lamps creates a tailored, focal point in the bedroom.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Avoid placement directly adjacent to heat sources or direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer fading.
