FAQs

Toast racks emerged in the 18th century as domestic dining habits shifted, becoming a staple of the formal breakfast table by the Victorian and Edwardian periods to keep slices crisp by preventing condensation.

They were predominantly manufactured from sterling silver or silver plate, utilizing wirework construction, soldering, and casting techniques for feet and central loop handles.

Authentic pieces feature clear British hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, indicating the assay office, standard mark, and date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

These pieces can be repurposed on open shelving in a kitchen or utilized on a dining sideboard to hold letters, napkins, or small stationery items.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, and stored in a low-humidity environment to prevent tarnishing.
