Persian Tribal Rug with Medallion, 1.87m X 1.44m, Circa 1880

Description

This rug was woven by the talented weavers of the Khamseh Federation who migrated in southern Persia. It dates to the last quarter of the 19th century when the Khamseh were still nomadic. This rug bears all the hallmarks of a nomadic rug, handspun wool and wonderful natural dyes. The pretty design is interesting as it belongs to a small group of nomadic rugs with a medallion design. Medallions are normally associated with urban rugs that derive their designs from the classical Court carpets, but here we have a Khamseh rug with a beautiful rendition of a medallion surrounded by the classical Herati motif. Note also the daring use of colours and the charming feathery leaves in the borders. It is really a joyful piece. Elegantly worn, thin and fine. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.
