Antique Tabriz Carpet, Mustafi Design, Persian

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine antique Tabriz carpet with a scrolling Mustafi design woven in Persia around circa 1900-1910.  Purchase this classical fine antique carpet through our website and we shall courier it to your home, included in the price is our exceptional rug underlay, which keeps carpets safe and secure on the floor.

Condition wise, this carpet is generally in good order.  With some scattered areas of lower pile in places, it has some minimal wear.  The structure of the carpet is very good indeed, with no holes or repairs or damage. The pile height is medium to low all over, but it would never have been very high as more often a Tabriz carpets wool pile were cut low and fine to show off these complex designs.

The Mustafi design we can see on this Tabriz carpet is famous one in carpet weaving, as the Persian prime minister in the late 19th Century commissioned artisans to create a scrolling spiralling version of the 'Gol Farang' (which is a foreign flower; inspired by French and English florals) pattern that was immensely popular at the time.  This Mustafi design was used in Mahal carpets woven in Sultanabad and occasionally Tabriz pieces such as this carpet.  Ziegler & Co had inspired and created decorative floral carpets woven in Sultanabad in the late 19th century, other workshops locally followed suit and these designs were made in competition to theirs.

Tabriz carpets from Northwest Persia are distinguished by their excellent weave and by their remarkable adherence to the classical traditions of Persian rug design, but they cannot be distinguished by any particular pattern or by their coloration. Tabriz rugs offer classical medallion designs and a host of allover patterns as well in every color imaginable, from brilliant rich tones to soft pastels.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire, & all over the UK by appointment.  We love to travel, and have been doing so since the early 90's having visited customers in Scotland, Ireland, France and Belgium helping private customers and interior designers find the perfect carpet or rug.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
