Antique Kashan Carpet, Persia

A simply beautiful and elegant antique Kashan carpet with a one way tree of life pictorial design.  The variety of animals we see on this carpet adds to the charm and character of this turn of the last century piece.  We can see birds and flowers in the border design, with roosters, snakes and peacocks at the base of the tree design. The weavers created a stunning design and the rare ivory border and main field colour is unusual too.  Most antique Kashan's used typical madder reds as the main colour or deep vivid blues in the centre.  This carpet may well have been commissioned for someone using these dyes and design. Woven around 1890-1900 the condition is very good, with no damage to the carpet and the ends and side selvedges are in place which frames the carpet and keeps its value.  When there is major loss at the ends and the outer borders are lost, it effects the value of the piece considerably.  The main pile of the rug is medium to low in places, but as it is a finer carpet and when it was made (circa 1890-1900) the pile was often cut low.  It is still a durable antique carpet that has great appeal and can be used in a drawing room, bedroom or study as a decorative item.

Kashans are highly treasured and classed among the very best Persian carpets and rugs. Kashan is north of Isfahan in the centre of Persia, this is also a town where fine rugs and carpets were woven, both have similarities in design and colour.
