Size: 7ft 5in x 4ft 6in (226 x 136cm).

Antique Caucasian Shirvan Akstafa star medallion rug from the Eastern Caucasus.

Circa 1880.

This is an outstanding example of type, with three star medallions on a dark indigo blue field. The central medallion is in ivory and the two are in a soft madder red. The four corners of the rug contain large fan tailed birds, probably peacocks, there are smaller birds and floral rosettes throughout the field. Of particular note either side of the lower medallion is a lady and gentleman with two children. The ivory ground main border is of a classic Caucasian design. A very special rug.

The rug has even wear and medium pile, there is slight corrosion to the browns. The ends retain the original fine ivory kilim.

Hand washed and ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
