Ukiyo-e, meaning pictures of the floating world, is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through the 19th centuries. These works feature depictions of popular culture, theatrical performers, historic tales, and domestic interiors produced via multi-block colour printing.

Traditional ukiyo-e prints were created using hand-carved cherry wood blocks and plant- or mineral-based inks applied to handmade washi paper. Printers used a wooden hand tool called a baren to rub the paper against inked blocks to transfer the intricate multi-colour designs.

Authentic prints from the Edo period often feature publisher seals, censorship stamps, and artist signatures integrated directly into the design. Examination under magnification typically reveals paper fiber texture, wood grain impressions, and alignment marks known as kento.

Framed woodblock prints serve as focal points above sideboards, desks, or along hallway walls in minimal or traditional settings. The rich indigo blue and earth tones pair effectively with dark wood furniture, neutral backgrounds, and muted lighting.
