Antique Khamseh 'Chicken' Rug, Southern Persia

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful condition antique Khamseh rug using the beautiful tribal 'chicken' or 'bird' design from the end of the 19th century. Fantastic colours with an amazing 'abrash' which is the term for dye change, as you can see the border changes colour from deeper reds to deeper reds to browns.  The blue dye changes too from lighter to darker, which adds so much interest and charm.  The ivory wool used for the three medallion design, highlights the 'chickens' who are pecking! An interesting tribal weaving from South-West Persia. The wool is lovely and glossy which you would expect from rugs from this region, the dyes are natural and work in harmony together.  We provide excellent rug underlay that would strengthen the rug on the floor all included in the price.  It also can be shipped worldwide.

In lovely condition, a fine weave and good medium pile height all over. Well preserved fringes and sidecords too. No stains and professionally washed and ready for the floor.

Rugs from Khamseh produced in the late 19th century from a confederation of tribes in Southern Persia whose rugs close to the origins of Qashghai and Afshar in style.  Khamseh rugs are especially known for their diamond shaped medallions and producing longer kelleh carpets, as well as using birds or chickens in the background. 19th century examples used high-quality, lustrous wool in their construction. The traditional Khamseh palette is deep with madder reds and dark blues and the construction being of a floppy handle and using a variation of designs and geometric motifs.

Please request a home visit to see this antique Khamseh rug in-situ, we have travelled all over the UK helping customers and interior designers since 1990.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
