Antique Fereghan Kelleh

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful antique Farhan or Fereghan Kelleh carpet woven with a 16th century 'Herati' or "Mahi" design as the main design throughout.  "Mahi" is short for "Mahi to Hos" meaning "fish in the pond". This design is a now stylised to a rosette surrounded by two leaves, the name "Mahi" meaning "fish" was given to this design because the leaves resemble swimming fish.  In early carpets sometimes these leaves were closer to looking like fish.  The colours are fantastic on this long antique carpet, the ivory pale border lifts the deeper rich colours and balances this piece perfectly.

Excellent fine weave on this 120 year old long carpet and with a medium pile height all over.  We have not done any restoration to this kelleh carpet. If purchased from us we would secure the fringes with a chain stitch and blanket stitch as there are some loose knots at the ends, sturdy rug underlay and this minimal restoration work is all included in the price.

Fereghan or Farahan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & all over the UK by appointment.  Please request a home visit to view this long antique Fereghan kelleh in situ, we love helping customers or interior designers find the perfect carpet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
