A 19th-century still life oil painting is a work of art executed with oil-based pigments on canvas or board, typically depicting inanimate objects such as flowers, fruit, or household items, reflecting the artistic conventions of the period.

Traditional oil paintings use ground pigments suspended in a drying oil like linseed applied to wooden panels, canvas, or board. Frames from this era were typically constructed from carved wood or composition material, then gilded with gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces are identified through inspection of the canvas or board substrate, the age-related craquelure in the oil paint layer, pigment analysis, and often the presence of artist signatures, exhibition labels, or period framing.

Integrating a classical oil painting into contemporary spaces works well by hanging it as a focal point on a neutral wall or resting it on a mantelpiece to create a layered, collected aesthetic that bridges historical and modern design.

Antique oil paintings should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Dusting should be done gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding any water or chemical cleaning agents on the painted surface.
