Antique Bakshaish Rug, Persian, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A pale ivory gorgeous antique Bakshaish rug woven around 1875-1880 in lovely original condition.  The ivory background with the soft lattice work in pinks and pale blues is so delicate and an appealing design.  Often rugs from this are used this design rather than a bold central motif, this makes the rug easy to place around a home.  The dye changes add immense character to this antique rug going from pale blues to darker blues in the border design.  The rug has retained the original selvedges/sides and ends too which adds to the rarity of the rug.  Beautiful soft wool has been used and we have professionally washed the rug and it is ready for the floor.

Bakshaish is a region very near to Heriz in the north-west of Persia, they tended to be softer in colour and have a geometric design of leaves and birds. Bakshaish adopt similar designs and weave to Heriz which are woven in the north of Persia.  In the late 19th century they used a variety of designs and colours, often bold and abstract they drew on influences from caucasian rugs using medallions and vivid dyes.  This type of rug has soft rich wool and as a tribal weaving of this region they often used a sandy yellow background allowing the warm reds, pale blue tones and greens in the leaves and abstract motifs to add character.  Antique Bakshaish carpets and rugs are referred to as the oldest production where Heriz and Serapi in the north of Iran come from.  Rare to find antique rugs and runners from this village in such condition now as more often they produced larger carpets for export.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
