Description

Large engraving by James Basire of the Antiquities of Athens.

The Choregic monument of Lysicrates is one of the earliest in Greece to use the Corinthian architectural order. The frieze running around the top of the monument show Dionysos and his satyrs attacking some pirates who had kidnapped him. The defeated pirates jumped overboard and turned into dolphins.

During the 18th century, architectural folios such as The Antiquities of Athens were published to document classical Greek ruins and relief sculptures. These publications provided precise measured drawings that catalysed the Neoclassical movement across European architecture, fine art, and decorative arts.

Copperplate engraving involved incising design lines directly into a polished copper plate using a steel tool called a burin. Ink was applied to the plate, wiped from the surface to leave ink in the grooves, and pressed onto damp rag paper using a high-pressure rolling press.

Authentic copperplate prints feature a distinct indented plate mark around the edge of the printed image created by the heavy pressure of the printing press. Additionally, 18th-century prints were produced on handmade laid paper, which displays chain lines and watermark impressions when held up to light.

Classical engravings can be framed with simple wood frames and displayed in symmetrical gallery walls or above a console table. Their monochrome tones complement both modern minimalist interiors and traditional dark wood schemes.
