Unusual Georgian Mahogany Gentlemans Dressing Chest Secretaire

Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

An unusual George III Mahogany gentlemen`s dressing chest / stand of excellent quality.

Late 18th century c1790.

This very elegant Neo-Classical chest / stand has a two piece hinged top which lifts open to reveal a delightful fitted interior, with an arrangement of various sectioned mahogany lidded compartments within. Flanking a central sliding adjustable easel mirror having the original mirror plate, with an open storage compartment below, plus a single drawer.

This is over three drawers. The top drawer opening to reveal a secretaire, comprising of a wooden sliding black leather topped writing surface with storage well below, flanked by various small compartments, two having silver coloured metal topped glass inkwells, plus a pen tray and one lidded compartment.

This is over two drawers of varying depths, with a dummy drawer to the bottom.

Having the very elegant original Neoclassical gilt handles and key.

To the lower right side is a deep square drawer, next to this a pull-out bidet. The original bidet ceramic is missing.

An ingenious space saving, elegant, beautiful piece of furniture, which only the Georgian era could have produced.

Standing on square tapering supports with brass castors.

The mahogany in original condition, with a lovely warm patina.

In excellent antique condition, with general expected signs of age and use. The top has a historical long crack along the right side, looks to have been there for many many years.

Very solid sturdy and strong.
