Large Japanese Iron & Mixed Metal Tsuba - Benten Upon a Sea Dragon - Signed

Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this Edo period (Circa 1840) Iron & mixed metal onlaid Tsuba , the subject depicts a scene of Benten riding a Golden sea Dragon, the Dragon carved to imitate movement and intertwined through clouds from the front of the Tsuba to the rear, highlighted in a beautiful Golden patina with Silver highlights to claws and whiskers, Benten formed from silver and modelled wearing traditional robes holding the jewel that grants wishes whilst stood upon the back of the Golden sea Dragon, signed in a three character signature , a nice addition to your Tsuba , Samurai arms and armour or Japanese metalwork collection.

Literature :

In Japanese folklore Benten is one of the seven lucky Gods of Japan who is often depicted riding a golden Dragon. She carries a jewel that can grant wishes. She is the ruler of love, music, arts, inspiration, talent, wealth, good fortune and romance. As a sea and water goddess she is a purifying force that protects people from the darkness of the material world. She is also a protector from earthquakes.
