Description

This is an exceptionally rare and very fine prayer rug by Haji Jalili from Iranian Azerbaijan which dates from the late 19th century. The rug, in fine lustrous wool, has a rich terracotta field with two lions flanked by columns beneath a Mihrab which has a hanging lamp. The upper spandrels have a lattice of floral vines enclosed by ivory leaf and flowerhead borders, flanked by triple meandering vine guard stripes. This prayer rug was produced by the renowned Haji Jalili workshop in Marand, north west of Tabriz. This workshop produced a small number of outstanding weavings and they remain much sought after.

The carpet is in excellent condition and measures 186 cms by 132 cms.
