Description

This fabulous and unique salt-bag - 'namakdan' in Persian - was made by Zaggar Mangal nomads in the environs of south-eastern Persia bordering Baluchistan. Tightly woven on the front in weft-float brocade, the back is in simple plainweave. The sides are over-bound in goat-hair with a long goat-hair handle at the top for transportation. I love the intricate detail on the sides and base of the bag, particularly the brocade, coloured beads and white buttons - all symbolising good luck and protection. This bag must have been highly-prized bearing in mind the superb weaving - a woman who has skilfully put all her love and attention to detail into a bag for containing rock-salt and probably made for her husband or future husband - part of her dowry!

Size: 71cm x 41cm (2' 4" x 1' 4").

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
