Henry Valter (Fl. 1854 - 1897)
A Birmingham painter in oils and watercolours, who specialised mostly in landscapes and coastal scenes, but also genre, rural scenes, still life and views in Italy, Bruges, Germany and Holland. He exhibited in London between 1854 - 1864. His Suffolk Street exhibits included ''Port Saint Nicholas, on the Rhone'', 1859, £21; ''Castle of Monas, Burgundy'' 1860, £21; ''Palace of the Inquisitors and Castle of the Popes, Avignon'', £26.5s, and ''Fort of St Sebastian, Island of Camarque, Delta of the Rhone'', 1864, £35. He showed 100 works at the RBSA between 1875-97. Brook-Hart said of him, ''His marine pictures are professionally competent although inclined to be over-filled''. He was the brother of Frederick E. Valter, and his addresses were recorded as 282, Pershore Road, Belgrave Road and Bristol Road, Birmingham.
