Antique Dutch pewter hanging box, these may have been used to store salt or soap, but the exact use is unclear. Made from a circular cup base with a soldered on curved hanger, which is struck with an un-identified touch mark, Circa1820. P. Hornsby shows a very similar example on p366, Fig 1274; in his book ‘Pewter of the Western World’. It is heavy and well made, with modest wear. It is in excellent original condition, with medium-dark grey original surface patina.
