Lorenzo De'medici - Grand Tour Bronze C.1840

19th century
Description

A very good and finely cast bronze figure of Lorenzo de' Medici.

This is a 19th-century copy of Michelangelo's famous Renaissance marble sculpture in the New Sacristy of the Basillica of San Lorenzo in Florence which was sculpted in c. 1530.

The warm brown patina in excellent condition and the bronze is very heavy for its size.

These bronzes were bought by wealthy people who embarked on the ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe and this high quality bronze was probably cast by a foundry such as Barbedienne using the Reduction Mechanique to produce very finely detailed exact and smaller replicas of original marble sculptures. As here, often these were taken from life size figures.

The figure is of the Duke of Urbino - Lorenzo II de' Medici and is known as “Il Pensieroso” (The Thoughtful One).

The Duke is dressed in flowing robes and military armor and appears deep in thought, his chin resting on one hand.

A work of art and a beautiful 19th century bronze which would make a lovely gift.

Dimensiona are:

6.5 inches high, 2.3 inches deep, 2.7 inches wide.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Warm brown patina rubbed to bare metal on raised points: handling over decades.
Crisply chased details on armour and drapery: quality 19th-century reduction casting.
Dark oxidisation gathered in deep folds: gradual aging of the patinated surface.

This 19th-century Grand Tour bronze statuette depicts Lorenzo de' Medici, known as Il Pensieroso, seated upon a simple square plinth base in a thoughtful pose. The sculpture is rendered in a dark brown patinated bronze with a warm metallic finish, capturing the subject wearing classical armour and an ornate helmet with relief decoration. The figure rests his chin on his hand, displaying detailed drapery folds across his military costume and a smooth, reflective surface across the exposed metal of his limbs. Dimensions are 16.25 cm high by 6.75 cm wide and 5.75 cm deep. This piece suits placement upon a bookshelf within a gentleman's library or study, integrating neatly into classical or traditional interior schemes. The heavy cast object rests firmly on flat surfaces, offering a decorative sculptural accent for domestic display without requiring additional mounting. The compact scale allows it to sit comfortably amongst book collections or on desktop ledges.

Grand Tour bronzes are reduced-scale reproductions of famous classical sculptures acquired by European aristocracy during their travels across Italy and Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods, finished with hand-chiselled surface detail and treated with chemical patinas to achieve deep brown, black, or verdegris tones.

Authentic period castings display fine hand-chasing, crisp crisp anatomical detail, structural weight consistent with solid or thick-walled bronze, and natural wear to the patina along elevated surfaces.

A bronze statuette acts as a focal point when positioned on a dark wood desk, mantelpiece, or styled within an open bookshelf, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist surfaces.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners, applying a light coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface patina.
