Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process that produces smooth tonal gradations without cross-hatching. Developed in the 17th century and widely refined during the 18th and 19th centuries, it allowed printmakers to reproduce oil paintings with subtle shading and deep shadow tones.

Historically, mezzotints were executed on copper or steel plates rocked with a serrated metal tool to create a burr. Ink was then applied and selectively wiped before being pressed onto heavy cotton rag paper, often framed under glass with protective matting.

Authentic period mezzotints display a distinct indented platemark around the image perimeter, velvety depth in shadow areas, fine paper grain, and sometimes pencil signatures or publisher details printed along the lower margin.

A set of six uniform prints is typically arranged in a structured two-by-three or three-by-two grid to create visual symmetry. This configuration works well above a sideboard, along a hallway, or framing a central architectural feature.

To preserve antique paper art, display prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Use acid-free mounting board and UV-filtering glass to prevent foxing, yellowing, and image fading over time.
