Hamilton "The Maypole" and "The Harvest" Pair Stipple Engravings

19th century
Description

This charming pair of old stipple engravings "The Maypole" and "The Harvest" each measure 12" x 10". They are in original gilt frames giving an overall size of 14"x 12" for each picture. On the back of each is a later inscription giving a title of "The Maypole" and "The Harvest". I think these may be "May" and "August" from the series of "Months of the Year".

Date of Manufacture

McTague of Harrogate has dated these Georgian Oval Stipple Engravings to the 1800s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Stipple-engraved dot work: printmaking technique popular in late Georgian England.
Moulded oval gilt frames: Regency pattern with period wire loop hangers.
Softened water gilding on high points: age and handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A pair of Georgian stipple engravings titled "The Maypole" and "The Harvest" bring traditional pastoral scenes to an English country house interior. Each oval paper artwork sits behind glass within a gilt wood frame decorated with beaded moulding, showing muted gold tones alongside blue and pink pigments, while small suspension loops hang from the top of the frames. The overall size of each framed picture is 36 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. These pieces suit placement above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway. The rural compositions depict figures engaged in outdoor activities, including dancing near a tree and gathering crops close to a cottage. Later inscriptions appear on the reverse of each frame, identifying the individual subjects.

Stipple engraving gained immense popularity in Britain during the late 18th century, perfected by artists such as William Wynne Ryland and Francesco Bartolozzi. The method allowed printmakers to reproduce soft tonal gradations and painterly effects, making it ideal for rendering pastoral and romantic genre scenes popular in Georgian interiors.

These works were produced by etching tiny dots into a copper plate with a stippling needle or roulette wheel. Printed onto laid or wove paper, they were often finished with hand colouring in watercolour and set within carved or moulded gilt wood frames behind glass.

Authentic period prints display a distinctive pattern of tiny etched dots visible under magnification, rather than the mechanical dot matrix seen in modern offset reproductions. They typically feature plate marks from copper printing plates and show natural paper ageing or foxing.

Hang a matching pair symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish balance. The soft tones and classic oval shapes complement traditional English Country schemes as well as minimalist contemporary spaces seeking historical contrast.

Display prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper deterioration. Dust the frames gently with a soft dry brush, and clean the glass using a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding contact between liquids and the wooden frames.
