1950s Smiths Pocket Watch, Made in England

1940 - 1960
Description

1950s Smiths pocket watch, made in England.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made by the English case manufacturer Eclipse. It is in good condition, just a little marking to the back.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is in its original painted finish with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track. The dial looks good to the naked eye, some crazing if viewed through a jeweller’s loupe. The dial is quite creamy in real life. Signed Made in England at the bottom.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1950s:
Dial marked 'Made in England': post-war production from Smiths Cheltenham factory.
Broad wave decoration on the nickel plates: standard English lever movement finishing.
Thermal-blued steel hands: original mid-20th century factory specification.
Fine age crazing across the cream painted dial: natural lacquer drying over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

This mid-century open-face pocket watch from the 1950s is made in England by Smiths with a gold-plated case from the manufacturer Eclipse, a top winding crown, a ring loop, a white dial, black Arabic numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at six o'clock, and blued steel hands. The piece displays a polished gold-plated finish, a creamy painted dial, and black markings including the inscription "SMITHS" and "MADE IN ENGLAND". The back shows minor markings, while the glass lens and dial remain clean. Ideal for a gentleman's library, this timepiece can be displayed on a desk, stored in a study drawer, or carried in a waistcoat pocket. The photograph reveals several unmentioned details, including the ribbed texture of the winding crown, the arched bracket shape of the clear display stand, and the decorative patterned spine of the brown book placed in the background behind the watch.

Smiths was a premier British instrument and watch manufacturer operating extensively in the mid-20th century. During the 1950s, the company produced affordable, reliable mechanical timepieces in England, becoming a staple of British horological history.

Pocket watches from this era generally feature brass or gold-plated metal cases, glass or acrylic crystals, printed enamel or paper-backed dials, and mechanical brass movement components.

Authentic examples typically feature the Smiths brand signature on the upper dial, Made in England printed near the six oclock mark, a manual-wind crown at the top loop, and a sub-seconds dial.

A pocket watch can be carried traditionally using a fob chain attached to a waistcoat pocket, or positioned upright on a desk stand as a decorative horological accent.

Keep the timepiece in a dry environment to prevent moisture damage, avoid overwinding the mainspring, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a qualified watchmaker every few years.
