Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French chateau style super king bed from 1880 is constructed from giltwood with damask upholstery in gold and cream. The curved headboard and footboard feature an ornate carved giltwood crest, detailed guilloche moulding along the frame, and scrolling cabriole feet. A firm bed base supports a mattress measuring 183 cm wide by 198 cm length, while the headboard reaches 127 cm high and the base stands 94 cm high with an overall width of 196 cm and a 213 cm length. The frame displays a polished gold finish and woven patterned fabric across the entire padded exterior. Suitable as a grand centrepiece in a master bedroom today, this piece provides a classic sleeping arrangement. The structure accommodates standard super king mattresses while maintaining historical character through visible period craftsmanship and decorative details.

FAQs

French giltwood beds emerged predominantly during the 18th century, combining neoclassical or rococo carved wooden frames with micro-thin gold leaf applications and upholstered panels. Designs frequently incorporate corbeille curved footboards, floral cresting, and fluted legs.

These bedsteads are typically constructed from solid carved hardwoods such as beech or oak, prepared with layers of gesso clay, gilded with gold leaf, and fitted with woven damask, brocade, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, original mortise and tenon construction, and natural wear patterns where the underlying red or yellow clay bole shows through worn areas of gilding.

Position the bed as the primary focal point of the master bedroom, framing it with neutral linen drapery, subtle wall finishes, and clean-lined bedside tables to balance the detailed carved frame.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without water or chemical sprays, which dissolve gold leaf. Vacuum the fabric upholstery periodically using a low-suction soft brush attachment.
