This console table follows a French Chateau style and dates from later than 1960. Constructed from giltwood with gold leaf, it includes a fitted marble slab top. The elaborate design incorporates cabriole legs, deep acanthus leaf carving, and heavy rocaille scrollwork along the apron. Measuring 100 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 100 cm deep, the table fits appropriately beside the front door in a traditional hallway or grand entrance space. In a home today, this piece provides a functional surface for displaying decorative items while serving as a prominent architectural statement. The reflective gold leaf finish catches light effectively against a wall, while the smooth white and grey veined marble top offers a durable display area. The substantial scrollwork and organic leaf motifs coordinate with formal interior schemes.

Rococo giltwood console tables originated in 18th-century France, characterized by asymmetrical scrollwork, floral carvings, cabriole legs, and heavy gold leaf finishes topped with carved marble slabs.

These tables were typically hand-carved from hardwoods such as beech, lime, or oak, coated with gesso, finished with gold leaf gilding, and fitted with shaped marble tops.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery underneath, natural wear or oxidisation to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow clay bole, and hand-cut marble undersides with historical tool marks.

Designers frequently position these elaborate tables in grand foyers or hallways, contrasting the gilded detail against dark modern wall colours or pairing them with contemporary artwork.

Dust giltwood regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or wax polishes which can dissolve the underlying gesso and damage delicate gold leaf finishes.
