Description

19th-Century Victorian Fox Hunting Watercolour Painting – Signed & Dated 1857

Brief Description:

This is a charming and beautifully detailed original 19th-century British School watercolour painting depicting a traditional Victorian fox hunting scene, featuring a huntsman in a red hunting coat, mounted upon a magnificent white horse and accompanied by a pack of hounds.

The composition captures the atmosphere of a winter's hunting day, with bare woodland trees, rolling countryside and a wonderfully subdued natural colour palette.

The painting is signed in the lower-left corner and is accompanied by an interesting handwritten historical record, which confirms that the reverse was dated 20th July 1857.

According to the accompanying provenance, the painting was formerly owned by a long-established Cornish family before being purchased from an antique shop in Wadebridge, Cornwall, in 1989.

A delightful example of traditional British sporting art, presented within a glazed giltwood frame with a complementary grey-green mount.

British sporting art from the 19th century primarily depicts equestrian pursuits, fox hunting, coursing, and rural field activities. Influenced by artists such as John Ferneley and Henry Alken, these works emphasise naturalistic countryside landscapes, canine anatomy, and detailed equine portraiture.

Watercolours of this period were rendered using natural pigments bound with gum arabic and applied to handmade cotton or linen rag paper. Framing typically comprised softwood mouldings finished with gold leaf over gesso, protected behind clear sheet glass.

Authenticity is verified by examining period paper characteristics, including laid lines or deckle edges, alongside expected pigment degradation or minor foxing. Artist signatures accompanied by mid-19th-century dates and original gilding methods on the frame further indicate age.

Period sporting paintings suit traditional schemes such as English Country House or Gentlemans Library interiors, positioned above credenzas or integrated into gallery walls. Pairing framed watercolours with muted wall paint or timber panelling highlights the tonal composition of the artwork.

Watercolours must be displayed away from direct sunlight and fitted with UV-filtering glass to prevent pigment fading. Stable humidity levels prevent paper fibres from foxing, while acid-free conservation mounting boards protect against off-gassing from timber backings.
