This 19th-century English country chest of drawers is constructed from painted oak and pine with a dark blue finish, complemented by contrasting brass hardware. Three graduated drawers span the width of the piece, each fitted with a pair of swan-neck brass handles and a decorative central brass escutcheon. The framework stands upon shaped bracket feet with scrolled cut-outs, and the edges of the drawers and top display subtle signs of age and wear through the paint surface. Practical dimensions measure 91 cm high, 106.5 cm wide, and 57.5 cm deep. Position this storage item in a bedroom, hallway, or living room to add traditional character while providing functional surface space and drawer storage. The classic silhouette fits naturally alongside both antique and contemporary furnishings in domestic interiors.

FAQs

An English painted chest of drawers typically features a solid wooden frame with multiple horizontal drawers, solid brass hardware, and painted finishes originally applied to protect timber or align with historic interior colour palettes.

Georgian painted pieces were commonly constructed from softwoods such as pine or native hardwoods like oak and fruitwood, which were then coated in mineral-based paints and fitted with brass handles.

Authentic period painted furniture exhibits signs of natural age, including paint wear near handles and edges, historical joinery techniques like hand-cut dovetails, and uneven oxidation on the underlying wood and brass fittings.

A painted chest of drawers can be placed in a bedroom, hallway, or living space to add colour and texture, functioning as both structured storage and a surface for displaying lamps or decorative objects.

Dust the painted surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood movement and paint flaking.
