Cast lettering naming King Edward VII: production during his reign from 1901.
Hollow sand-cast backs with dark oxidisation: traditional British foundry casting.
Raised registration number cast on the back: official design recorded around 1902.
Old polish residue hardened in deep crevices: regular cleaning over many decades.

These early twentieth-century Edwardian chimney ornaments comprise a matched pair of cast brass equestrian figures depicting King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, finished in a warm gold tone with aged patina. The King wears military uniform with medals, while the Queen rides side-saddle, each figure posed atop a rectangular plinth inscribed with their titles. The rectangular bases feature raised foliate borders above openwork pierced arches containing symbols representing the four nations of Great Britain and Ireland. Standing 22.2 cm high, 16.5 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep, these solid metal display pieces show varied surface tarnish and dark verdigris accumulation within the recesses of the casting. They sit securely upon a mantelpiece in an English country house interior, bringing historical royal commemoration to a traditional fireplace setting.

Chimney ornaments are decorative metal items created to display on fireplace mantelpieces and hearths during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They commonly depict equestrian scenes, military figures, or royal portraiture cast in brass or iron.

Edwardian brass figurines were typically produced using sand-casting or mold-casting techniques. Molten brass alloy was poured into structured molds, resulting in detailed relief figures with hollow or semi-hollow reverse sides that were hand-finished and polished.

Authentic pieces display historical casting seams, natural patination in recessed areas, and hand-finished detailing around text and borders. They often include impressed names or registration marks along the base, along with minor surface wear on unpolished areas.

These decorative items are commonly styled atop fireplace mantelpieces, open bookshelves, or console tables. The warm tones of natural brass complement dark timber surfaces, painted joinery, and traditional or eclectic interiors.

Maintain brass figures by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth. To preserve natural patination and surface history, avoid harsh chemical solvents, opting instead for gentle metal polish applied sparingly to raised surfaces.
