Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Signed and dated A. Boote 1907: fixes the year of painting.
Watercolour wash and delicate line work: typical Edwardian portrait technique.
Segmented oval frame with gilt slip: framing contemporary with the artwork.
Sawn softwood backboard secured by brads: early twentieth-century mounting.
Light foxing on the paper: natural oxidisation over more than a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian watercolour painting from 1910 depicts a detailed portrait of a young girl with blonde curly hair, signed and dated "A.Boote 1907". The artwork is set on paper within an original oval wooden frame finished with a polished dark brown tone, a gilt inner slip, and a glass cover. Minor foxing and light surface marks appear across the soft wash shading of the cream background. The piece measures 33 cm high and 28 cm wide. Traditional country house interiors provide an ideal setting for this framed portrait, which hangs effectively on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room. The compact dimensions allow for versatile placement alongside other period paintings or as a standalone focal point.

FAQs

Edwardian watercolour portraiture, produced from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by soft washes, delicate linework, and realistic depictions of subjects, often featuring subtle earth tones and oval compositions.

These artworks typically utilised watercolour pigment applied to rag paper, mounted within moulded wooden frames with gilt inner slips and protective glass.

Authentic pieces often display period-accurate artist signatures, dates in the early 1900s, natural toning on paper, and original wooden backing boards with historical fixing nails.

Position the framed portrait within a gallery wall mixed with modern artwork, or display it upright on a bookshelf or mantelpiece to add historical character to modern spaces.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintain low and stable humidity levels, and ensure UV-filtering glass is used if replacing the glazing.
