This nineteenth-century Chinese hanging scroll painting depicts Buddha Shakyamuni seated cross-legged in a meditation posture upon a lotus throne. Executed in ink and colour on silk, the artwork displays blue and gold robes alongside red and green fabric accents, set against a circular halo motif. Red seal marks appear on the right-hand side of the composition. The physical condition exhibits wear with degradation, discolouration, surface marks and creasing across the material, while the scroll itself is finished with a pale silk brocade border and suspended from a wooden hanging rod measuring 176 cm by 75 cm. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining space or hallway, the scroll integrates easily into traditional and contemporary interior schemes. The neutral wall tones behind the hanging highlight the rich blue and gold pigments of the central deity figure. Regular placement away from direct sunlight preserves the delicate ink and mineral pigment details on the silk and paper backing.

FAQs

Chinese Buddha scroll paintings from the 19th century, produced during the Qing Dynasty, are sacred devotional artworks rendered on paper or silk and mounted onto textile backings for vertical hanging.

These scrolls are typically created using natural mineral pigments, water-based inks, and gold leaf applied to delicate paper or silk, supported by woven silk brocade borders and wooden roller bars.

Specialists examine the natural patination and age wear on the paper or silk, authentic cinnabar ink seals, traditional hand-stitched silk mountings, and period-specific brushwork execution.

Position the scroll as a central focal point on a neutral or textured accent wall, pairing it with low-profile wooden furniture and clean contemporary lines to emphasize its graphic presence.

Keep the scroll away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent fabric brittleing, and store it loosely rolled around its lower cylinder in an acid-free box.
