This Victorian iron bedstead dates from 1880 and comes in a dark grey gun metal finish. The construction uses cast iron and wrought iron, forming a double-sized frame with vertical spindles, turned finials on the corner posts, and cast iron scrollwork decoration across both the headboard and footboard. The piece is restored with visible traces of metalwork hardware on the lower frame corners. It measures 147 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 200 cm deep overall, and accommodates a standard 137 cm by 190 cm mattress. In a modern interior, this bed frame functions as the central sleeping furniture in a bedroom.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, iron bedsteads became widely manufactured due to hygiene standards, offering an alternative to wooden frames. They are characterized by cast iron decorative joinery mounted onto wrought iron frame structures.

Victorian bedsteads combine wrought iron tubular frames and vertical spindles with decorative cast iron ornaments poured directly onto the joints using specialized mouldings.

Authentic period bedsteads typically feature heavy cast iron corner joints known as dovetails, hand-poured lead detailing around decorative elements, and occasional foundry registration stamps.

An iron bedstead works in rustic farmhouse or English country schemes when layered with natural linen textiles, tailored coverlets, and accompanied by contrasting timber side tables.

Maintain painted iron frames by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying touch-up sealant to any paint chips to prevent rust development.
