Description

Lovely Mid-Century Impressionist Townscape Impasto Oil Painting by Jean Corbeau

Brief Description:

A beautiful and highly atmospheric original mid-20th-century Oil on Canvas Townscape Painting by artist Jean Corbeau.

The charming composition depicts a cluster of old European townhouses with weathered façades, red-tiled rooftops and distinctive architectural features beneath a wonderfully moody sky.

Painted in a loose, expressive Impressionist style, the artist has employed thick, richly textured impasto brushwork, creating a wonderful sense of depth, movement and character.

The beautifully balanced palette of muted blues, earthy browns, warm ochres and touches of terracotta adds considerably to the painting's atmospheric appeal.

Signed by the artist in the upper right corner.

The work is mounted within an attractive vintage giltwood frame, which complements the composition beautifully.

A wonderfully decorative, original mid-century painting, ready to be hung and enjoyed immediately

This original mid-century impressionist townscape oil painting dates from 1950 and belongs to the mid-century modern style. Produced with oil paint on canvas, it is mounted in a layered wood gilt frame. The composition depicts European architecture using a palette of warm earth tones, including brown, red, and cream impasto tones, along with an artist signature visible in the upper right corner and layered wood mouldings on the frame. The framed work measures 49.5 cm high, 90.1 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. Positioned in a home today, this piece hangs on a wall above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or dining area. The thick impasto paint texture and palette knife technique create visual depth, complemented by the weathered facades of old townhouses beneath a moody sky. The work is ready to display and integrate into an interior scheme focusing on mid-century design.

FAQs

Mid-century impressionist townscape paintings feature urban architecture rendered with visible brushwork, textured impasto techniques, and structured composition choices popular during the mid-20th century.

Artists applied heavy oil pigments onto canvas or wooden panels using palette knives and stiff brushes, framed within multi-tiered wood mouldings finished with gilding or neutral paint tones.

Authentic period pieces display genuine surface craquelure, natural age-related oxidation on the canvas backing, artist signatures rendered in oil pigment, and period-correct frame construction.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a sideboard or mantelpiece, pairing it with neutral wall finishes and timber furniture to highlight the earthy palette and impasto texture.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting the raised impasto surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush without applying chemical solvents.
