This Victorian large single size bedstead dates from 1880 in the aesthetic of Heals, constructed from warm brass and iron. The structure incorporates square corner posts topped with brass finials, a curved top rail with a central sphere decoration, and an arrangement of vertical spindles. It displays signs of gentle cleaning to preserve the original patina, alongside structural elements including a platform base and maker's label. The overall dimensions measure 147 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 200 cm deep, accommodating a standard three-foot-six by six-foot-three mattress. Suitable for placement in a bedroom or guest room within an English country house setting, the bedstead provides a focal sleeping platform. The combination of brass and iron materials offers a durable metal frame that integrates easily into traditional and period interior schemes. The open vertical spindle configuration maintains a visual lightness while supporting the architectural headboard and footboard components.

Victorian brass bedsteads became prominent during the mid-to-late nineteenth century as manufacturing techniques improved and hygiene concerns favoured metal over timber frames. They typically feature tubular or square brass frames constructed with decorative castings and vertical spindles.

These bedsteads were constructed using brass tubing or drawn brass over iron cores, combined with cast iron corner joints and iron side rails that hooked into the headboard and footboard to form a rigid frame.

Authentic Victorian brass bedsteads usually exhibit cast iron dovetail joint fittings where the side rails connect to the corner posts. Stamped maker marks, registration numbers, and natural age-related oxidisation on the brass surfaces also indicate period construction.

A brass bedstead can be styled by pairing it with crisp white linen bedding and textured throws to highlight the metalwork. Incorporating modern wall paint or wallpaper behind the headboard creates a contemporary backdrop while maintaining historical context.

Maintain brass bedsteads by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that strip protective lacquers or natural patina. Unlacquered brass can be gently treated with specialised brass cleaner if a brighter finish is preferred.
