Mid-Century Modernist Abstract Crucifixion of Christ Painting c.1950

Brief Description:

This is a fascinating original Mid-20th-Century Modernist Abstract Religious Mixed Media Painting, depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

This striking and thought-provoking composition presents a highly stylised interpretation of one of Christianity's most powerful and recognisable subjects.

At the centre of the image is the elongated, abstracted figure of Christ upon the Cross, his body depicted through flowing, almost sculptural forms in delicate shades of blush pink and ivory.

The head is represented by a circular form surrounded by sharply pointed shapes, suggestive of the Crown of Thorns.

The figure is intersected by geometric elements and angular forms, whilst the surrounding composition features a complex arrangement of densely interwoven black linear patterns, repeating circular motifs and abstract symbolism.

An especially appealing feature is the magnificent earlier 19th-century giltwood frame in which the artwork is presented.
