This Edwardian portrait miniature depicts a fair-haired child wearing a white shirt and a blue bow tie, painted in watercolour by Mrs Porter Bailey. The artwork sits within an oval aperture featuring a carved ribbon border and a gilded frame, all set against a cream fabric mount within a carved gilded rectangular frame. The visible details include the child's attire, the oval portrait format, the inscribed name Mervyn J Ingram, and the gilded mouldings on both the inner and outer frames. The picture measures 6 cm by 7.5 cm. Such a piece finds its place in a home today displayed on a narrow wall space, a mantelpiece, or within a traditional English country house interior setting. It serves as a decorative focal point in a hallway, study, or drawing room, adding historical character to compact areas where small-scale works of art create an intimate visual interest.

A portrait miniature is a small-scale, highly detailed painting, historically executed on ivory, vellum, card, or copper, popular from the 16th to early 20th centuries as personal tokens or family keepsakes.

Artists typically applied watercolour or gouache onto substrates such as thin ivory wafers or paper, which were then housed within glazed metal, wood, or gilded frames to protect the delicate surface.

Authentic period miniatures usually exhibit fine, precise brushwork visible under magnification, era-appropriate framing techniques, natural signs of age such as minor oxidisation, and often carry an artist monogram or signature.

Portrait miniatures can be integrated into a gallery wall, displayed on an easel atop a bookshelf, or paired with contemporary ceramics on a mantelpiece to create visual contrast.

Keep the miniature out of direct sunlight and away from humid environments to prevent fading and material warping, and clean the outer glass frame using a soft, dry cloth without applying liquids.
