Antique Gold Propelling Pencil

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of an antique gold propelling pencil dating from the late 19th / early 20th Century. It is good quality and the outside is beautifully decorated with fine engine turned and engraved foliate scroll decoration. It is fitted with a retractable pencil mechanism and sliding grip and it has an intaglio seal engraved with a monogram.

There are no hallmarks and it would have been common not to mark pieces like this however surface tests indicate 9ct gold.

The total weight is 8.72g although this includes the inner workings so is not the weight of the gold.

It is in good condition for its age and it slides smoothly. There are some faint surface marks and a few small dinks, particularly to the collar around the end of the pencil (see photo) but no major damages and it displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Approximate Dimensions :

Length : 4 1/4” (11cm)

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian propelling pencil dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Made of 9ct gold, the piece displays a warm gold colour and a polished finish. The design incorporates a slender hexagonal barrel with a fine engine-turned pattern, chased scrollwork decoration, a flared finial at the cap, a sliding mechanism, and a polished tip. Measuring 11 cm in length, the pencil exhibits faint surface marks and small dinks on the collar around the end. Displayed in an office or library, it serves as a functional writing instrument on a desk or as part of a collection of vintage writing tools.

FAQs

A gold propelling pencil is a mechanical writing instrument fitted with a metal casing that advances or retracts a lead core via an internal twist or slide mechanism.

Nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples were typically crafted from solid gold, silver, or gold-plated brass, frequently featuring hand-chased ornamentation or engine-turned engraving.

Authentic period pieces usually feature hallmarked metal stamps, intricate hand engraving, functional internal lead mechanisms, and specialized fittings for attachment to pocket watch chains or chatelaines.

These historical instruments can be styled as functional accessories on an executive office desk, presented within a glass shadow box, or arranged alongside traditional leather stationery items.

Wipe the gold exterior gently with a dry microfibre cloth to remove oils, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that may damage delicate internal mechanisms.
