This large Dutch School oil painting on canvas dates from 1950 and depicts a winter landscape by listed artist Pieter Cornelis Steenhouwer. The composition shows a snow-covered village scene with a brick watchtower, bare winter trees, children skating on ice, and figures along a snowy path under a muted grey sky. The work is set within an original ornate gold leaf gilt frame featuring heavy relief mouldings, elaborate floral scrollwork carving along the deep borders, and corner cartouches. The painting measures 77 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library, this traditional pastoral scene hangs well above a mantelpiece as a focal point. The visible palette incorporates cool tones of white, soft blue, and earthy brick red alongside the gilded finish of the heavily moulded wooden frame. The textured gesso surface and intricate corner ornamentation provide a decorative framing for the atmospheric holiday artwork, presenting a finished piece ready for interior placement.

Dutch winter landscape paintings are a genre established during the 17th century that continued through the 19th century, depicting ice-skating, frozen canals, snow-covered architecture, and overcast skies. Artists focused on atmospheric lighting effects and minute details of daily rural life during the winter season.

These works typically utilise oil-based pigments applied to linen canvas or timber panels. Framed examples often feature carved softwood or moulded gesso frames finished with hand-applied gold leaf or bronze gilding.

Authentication involves examining natural age craquelure across the paint surface, artists signatures, and the structural construction on the reverse of the canvas or stretcher. Frame backing, aged timber oxidisation, and period hardware also provide key structural evidence.

Positioning an artwork above a mantlepiece or sideboard provides an anchor point in classic and modern spaces. Pairing rich gilt frames with neutral wall paint creates contrast while maintaining a focal visual centre.

Paintings should be kept in stable humidity and away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Light surface dusting with a dry, soft-bristle brush is recommended, while chemical cleaning should be undertaken exclusively by professional conservators.
