This early 20th century Anglo-Chinese campaign chest of drawers is constructed from solid camphor wood with a medium brown finish. The tall silhouette measures 129.5 cm high, 109.5 cm wide and 51 cm deep, and separates into two distinct transportable sections. The exterior surfaces are profusely decorated with intricate relief carvings depicting traditional oriental landscapes, figures, and pagoda motifs across the top gallery, sides, and seven drawer fronts. Inset arched carved handles sit flush within the drawers, complemented by side carrying handles and a moulded plinth base. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or bedroom setting, the piece provides generous storage across its multi-tiered configuration. The working locks bear stamps from 'The China Camphorwood Trunk Co. Trunks Maker Hong Kong', while the interior retains a distinctive natural timber aroma. The solid wood construction and detailed sculptural workmanship reflect traditional campaign furniture design conventions adapted for colonial export markets.

Originally crafted during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Asian trade ports, these chests were designed for military officers and travellers. They utilised local aromatic camphor wood, which naturally deterred insects during long maritime voyages, and were decorated with intricate relief carvings representing native landscapes.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid camphor wood, joined with traditional dovetail timber joints. Features often include brass hardware, side carrying handles, recessed drawer pulls, and multi-layered relief carvings depicting architectural and botanical motifs.

Authentic camphor wood items retain a distinctive, long-lasting natural aromatic scent when drawers are opened. Additional signs include deep hand-carved relief detailing showing subtle variations, heavy solid timber weight, and functional brass side fittings.

Position the chest as a focal feature against a plain or painted backdrop to highlight the tactile surface texture. Complement the dark timber tone with modern neutral textiles, clean-lined brass accents, or contemporary artwork.

Dust the deep relief carvings regularly using a soft-bristled brush or vacuum attachment. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically to maintain moisture and patina.
