This Edwardian pocket barometer and altimeter dates from 1900 and comes housed in its original hinged case. The instrument consists of a lacquered brass casing with bevelled glass, a silvered aneroid scale dial marked with rain, change, and fair readings, and a suspension ring at the top. The fitted case is finished in maroon faux leather and lined with green satin and plush velvet. Visible details include a moveable altitude-setting marker, a metal push button release with a strengthening patch at the front of the box, and a single black indicator hand. The piece measures 6.7 cm high, 4.8 cm wide, and 1.7 cm deep. This portable scientific instrument suits display on an office desk or library table within a collector's study, where it serves as both a decorative gentleman's library accessory and a working weather glass.

An Edwardian pocket barometer is a compact meteorological instrument produced during the early twentieth century, designed to measure atmospheric pressure and predict weather trends or calculate altitude while travelling.

Pocket barometers were predominantly crafted with lacquered brass bodies, silvered metal dial faces, bevelled glass crystals, and interior aneroid capsules made of copper or beryllium alloy, often paired with plush-lined leather cases.

Authentic pieces feature clear engraving on the dial showing atmospheric pressure in inches, terms such as Compensated or Rain-Change-Fair, a brass loop suspension ring, and period-appropriate scale markings for altitude in feet.

These instruments are typically styled open inside their original fitted cases on executive desks, bookshelves, or side tables alongside leather-bound books and brass decorative objects.

Keep the piece in a dry climate-controlled environment to prevent brass tarnishing and internal mechanism corrosion, dusting the glass gently with a microfibre cloth and conditioning the exterior leather case periodically.
