A Coastal Landscape Painting After William Shayer

19th century
Description

After William Shayer (1787-1879), a small oil painting on wooden panel of a coastal scene, probably on the English east coast, showing fishing vessels drawn up onto a beach near a breaker with figures around them, against a background of low cliffs and rising clouds, apparently unsigned, English circa 1860, framed in a later gilt frame. Panel: 10” by 12”.

Condition: Excellent, the painting is in very good condition with no paint loss or damage, it is in remarkably clean condition with bright, fresh colours, the frame, which is probably mid 20th century, is in good condition, and overall the painting has a charming appearance despite its small size.

Attribution and date: the painting is what is generally known as ‘after’ or perhaps ‘school of’ William Shayer, who was known for painting similar subjects. The painter of this particular work, whilst anonymous, was obviously skilled at rendering a busy scene onto a small panel, and probably painted for a living as opposed to for personal pleasure. There is a typed label on the reverse suggesting a date of around 1880, in our opinion the painting is a little earlier than this, hence the given date of circa 1860.

This Victorian marine oil painting on a wooden panel dates from 1860 and follows the style of William Shayer. The composition depicts fishing vessels drawn up on a sandy shore with figures near a breaker, against a background of low cliffs and an atmospheric sky in muted blue tones. The piece is set within a moulded gilt frame with tiered sight edges and visible corner mitres, displaying a lightly distressed gold leaf finish. The painting measures 30 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this artwork suits placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway, adding a traditional coastal retreat aesthetic to the interior. The bright, fresh colours remain well-preserved with no paint loss or damage on the wooden panel, while the frame shows gentle signs of age consistent with its mid-twentieth-century origin. The compact dimensions allow for versatile hanging on various wall spaces where small-scale historic oil paintings provide a traditional decorative focal point.

19th-century British coastal landscapes frequently depict scenes of daily maritime labor, including fishermen, beached boats, and coastal communities under natural atmospheric conditions. Influenced by movements like Romanticism, these paintings emphasize dramatic skies, natural light, and authentic rural shoreline activities.

Artists during this period primarily utilized oil paints applied to stretched flax canvas or wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from carved timber or layered plaster composition moulding, decorated with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings display natural surface age, including fine craquelure across the paint layer, age-appropriate darkening of the varnish, and oxidation on the wooden backing or canvas support. Frame construction features period joinery and hand-applied gilding.

A traditional marine landscape can be mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to establish a central focal point. Paired with neutral wall colours and natural timber textures, the warm gold frame adds warm historical accenting to modern decor schemes.

Position the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals on both the paint surface and the gilded frame.
