Brief Description:
The work portrays Philip II standing full-length in the extraordinarily elaborate court dress associated with the mid-16th-century Spanish Habsburg court. He is shown wearing a richly embroidered golden doublet and trunk hose beneath a dark outer garment, with beautifully detailed sleeves, jewellery and sword.
The composition has all the drama and formality of the great Renaissance court portraits of the 16th century, with the sitter standing against a deliberately restrained dark background so that the extraordinary richness of his costume becomes the principal focus.
Philip II was one of the most powerful monarchs of Renaissance Europe and also has a fascinating connection with Tudor England. Through his marriage to Queen Mary I, he became King of England and Ireland during her reign from 1554 until she died in 1558.
The portrait is particularly impressive in scale, measuring approximately 64 inches in height, and makes a tremendous decorative statement when displayed. The sheer size, dark palette, gilded detailing and elaborate frame give it a wonderful country-house, manor-house or historic-interior presence.
The reverse of the canvas bears a clearly visible stencil reading “STUDIO M. CANALS”, providing an interesting studio association to the work.
The painting is housed within an extremely decorative black and gilt architectural frame, embellished with substantial carved and gilded scrolling ornaments to the top, sides and base. The frame complements the Renaissance character of the portrait beautifully and adds considerably to its overall impact.

There is extensive fine craquelure throughout the painted surface, clearly visible in the photographs and entirely in keeping with the character and age of the work. There are also minor surface marks and signs of previous restoration or retouching commensurate with age.
