Brief Description:
A wonderfully atmospheric large early 20th-century Edwardian oil painting on canvas, dating to circa 1901–1910, depicting a joyful community gathering within the grounds of a substantial stone church or chapel.
Several young girls are shown playing with skipping ropes, while other figures converse, watch the festivities or wander through the church grounds.
The artist has captured the character of an Edwardian social occasion particularly well, creating an engaging snapshot of community life at the beginning of the 20th century.
Behind the gathering stands an impressive Gothic-style stone building, its tall lancet windows partially obscured by the surrounding trees. Sunlight filters through the foliage, illuminating the architecture and colourful figures below, while glimpses of blue sky add freshness and depth to the composition.
Presented within a magnificent and deeply moulded ornate gilt and gesso frame, enriched with scrolling foliate decoration, pierced corner ornament and elaborate central cartouches.
