Artsonline has dated this Dutch Winter Landscape Painting to the 1960s.
Brief Description:
The composition is beautifully balanced, with a substantial old tower rising amongst snow-covered trees to the left, while a church and surrounding buildings occupy the middle distance. Numerous elegantly painted figures skate across the frozen water, bringing movement and life to the otherwise tranquil winter setting.
Particularly attractive is the expansive evening sky, painted in soft shades of blue, grey, cream and warm golden-orange, suggesting the last light of the day breaking through heavy winter clouds. Reflections across the ice and the scattered snow-covered banks give the painting excellent depth and atmosphere.
The work is confidently painted with areas of expressive, textured brushwork and numerous charming incidental details, including the distant townscape, birds in flight and individual skating figures.
Signed “Gaastra” to the lower right-hand corner.
The painting is presented within an attractive decorative gilt frame with ornate corner and foliate detailing, which complements the winter palette beautifully and allows the work to be displayed immediately.
