This 18th century Georgian country chest of drawers is made of elm with a warm brown colour and an excellent patina. The small piece has three long drawers with deeply moulded panels, brass drop handles, keyhole escutcheons, and stands on bracket feet with gnarling to the front right corner and old repairs. It measures 81 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 65 cm deep. In a modern interior, the rustic farmhouse chest provides storage for clothing or linens in a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The compact proportions allow it to fit easily into smaller rooms while adding traditional character and practical surface space for lamps or decorative items.

18th-century country chests of drawers were typically constructed from local hard timbers such as elm, oak, or fruitwood rather than imported mahogany. Design traits include simple geometric mouldings, bracket or bun feet, hand-cut joinery, and functional brass drop handles or brass escutcheons.

Georgian country furniture makers utilised native English elm timber due to its durable grain and accessibility. The interior drawer linings were commonly crafted from pine or oak, fitted with iron nails, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period chests exhibit uneven hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer casings, and natural wood shrinkage along drawer bottoms or back panels. Additional indicators include genuine patination around keyholes and period-correct brass fittings.

A country elm chest works well as a focal piece in entryways, bedrooms, or living spaces. Contrast the deep wood tones and historic patination with contemporary wall paint, minimalist ceramics, or modern artwork to create a balanced interior space.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain timber hydration. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, drying, or colour fading.
